Congratulations to the faculty members who successfully completed the Spring 2024 Global Learning Institute! This year's cohort had participants representing many disciplines across campus, including medicine, engineering education, business, education, theatre and dance, health and human performance, food science and human nutrition, psychology, journalism, and languages, literatures, and cultures. During this semester-long professional development program, they visited many campus resources in person, such as the museums and the libraries, and identified strategies for incorporating global learning elements into their courses in collaboration with these resources.

The Office of Global Learning and the Center for Latin American Studies welcomed Latin American COIL/Virtual Exchange experts, Dr. Ana Salomao from Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil and Dr. Veronica Rodriguez from Universidad Veracruzana (UV) in Mexico to the UF campus last week.

During their visit, Dr. Salomao and Dr. Rodriguez met with several faculty and staff and participated in a panel as part of a luncheon to discuss their experiences in establishing effective COIL/Virtual Exchange networks and insights into research opportunities. The University of Florida’s Japanese club hosted a spring festival, “Harumatsuri,” celebrating Japanese culture and highlighting the cherry blossom season. Koto performers, calligraphy artists, and student organizations joined us for this event. Close to 200 attendees, including UF students, Gainesville locals, and students from various other schools, had the pleasure of attending this festival and sharing a deep love for Japanese culture.

Dr. Sharon Austin, Professor of Political Science, accompanied 13 students to Paris, France for the African Americans in Paris class. This class was first developed in 2007 by Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans, a former Associate Professor of Women's Studies and African American Studies at UF. Dr. Evans again offered the class in 2010 and Dr. Austin began offering it in 2014. Since 2014, she has accompanied students to Paris on nine separate occasions.

The International Student Council (ISC) was formed to provide a direct line for listening to concerns and sharing ideas for improving the international student experience at the University of Florida. Students from all over the world representing diverse backgrounds and degree programs make up the council. It met five times in the past academic year and provided valuable input and suggestions to implement in future semesters for the benefit of all international students at UF.

Dr. Karen Reed, Clinical Associate Professor, College of Nursing, is returning to Hanoi, Vietnam Summer 2024 for 6 weeks as a Global Faculty Affiliate at VinUni. She will build upon the relationships and projects initiated last summer with their Faculty of Nursing program as a US Fulbright Specialist. Projects include creating a rehabilitation nursing course and conducting exam preparation with their students who will take the US registered nurse licensure exam (NCLEX) upon graduation. Additionally, she will collaborate with the university and a national NGO to develop a white paper on the role of nursing in addressing Vietnam's rehabilitation needs.
