The seminar will deal with a cultural peculiarity of the Slavs of Central Europe during the Middle Ages, the appearance of the restless dead. This phenomenon is related to the change in funeral ritual, which during paganism was cremation, while Christianization imposed burial. This caused such a considerable collective trauma that the dead who during their lifetime had been excluded from common society manifested themselves in some sinister way after death and became “aggressive restless dead” until the ancient ritual was applied to them as the only means of placating them after death. In connection with this we will study what possibilities the textual and archaeological materials give us to reconstruct a divinity related to the dead in the Slavic pagan pantheon.
