The International Center is pleased to announce that Fulbright Awareness Month will be celebrated from March 12 to April 12, 2018.  Multiple informational sessions for students, scholars, faculty and staff will provide opportunities to learn about the Fulbright application process, and to hear about the experiences of past Fulbright scholars and students. On Friday, February 9th, faculty gathered to learn a few “tricks of the trade” to recruit students to their Study Abroad programs.

Mike Weigold (Journalism), Jennifer Kaufman (IFAS), Phillip Kaufman (IFAS), Muthusami Kumaran (FYCS), and Angela Miller (Study Abroad) presented on topics such as marketing principles, articulating the value of your Study Abroad program, developing a marketing mindset, and the marketing toolkit. Ping Neo, Director of International Engineering Programs at the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering visited Madrid, Spain where she met with colleagues at Spanish engineering partner schools. Those schools included Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Universidad Comillas Pontificia, where together are looking to bring further international awareness and engagement into the field of engineering. With this trip she hopes to encourage more globally-minded engineers to keep up with the increasingly connected environment.

The UF Center for Latin American Studies is proud to announce the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) 2018 Kalman Silvert Award winner is Distinguished Professor Emerita, Dr. Carmen Diana Deere. The Kalman Silvert Award was created in 1982 and "recognizes senior members of the profession who have made distinguished lifetime contributions to the study of Latin America, and is LASA's highest honor." This is the second time that a former UF Latin American Studies Center Director has received this award; Dr. Helen Safa (deceased) was the 2007 Kalman Silvert Award recipient.

The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) is an active member of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). Recently, UFIC staff attended and presented at the AIEA annual conference held in Washington, DC. Members of the UFIC delegation included: Dean Leonardo Villalón, Susanne Hill, Sandra Russo, Angela Miller and Julie Fesenmaier.

Under the theme, Internationalization Imperative in Turbulent Times, the 2018 AIEA Conference attracted hundreds of senior international officers worldwide. The University Athletic Association and UFIC joined forces for a cultural exchange at the Gators Women's Basketball game last Thursday. Over 200 international scholars, staff and students registered to attend _International Night_ in celebration of the diversity of the Gator Nation. Last year, UF hosted 6,649 international students, 458 exchange students and 1,623 international visiting scholars. Currently, 154 countries are represented on campus, including the following Women's Basketball team members: Funda Nakkasoglu, Paulina Hersler and Elif Portakal,  hailing from Australia, Sweden and Turkey. Peace Corps announced yesterday that the University of Florida (UF) ranked No. 5 among large size schools on the agency’s 2018 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities list. There are 68 Gators currently volunteering worldwide.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the University of Florida has ranked among the top 5 large colleges and universities. In addition, Florida ranked No. 3 among Peace Corps’ top volunteer-producing states in 2017. There are 355 volunteers from the Sunshine State currently serving worldwide.

Dr. William Ray Kesling, Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Activities at UF College of the Arts was chosen to teach at the 2018 Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) International Summer Program. The course “What is the Good Life? A Look through Western Eyes” has been very well received, and students as well as professors are showing high interest in this intercultural exchange.
