The State Department International Visitor Leadership Program, brought an Indonesian delegation to Northeast Florida and the University of Florida. UF professors from the School of Forest, Fisheries and Geomatics Sciences met with this group, as well as staff from UFIC. Discussion were held on U.S. agroforestry education and research programs at UF, and agroforestry crops in Florida.

These visitors are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Their program was arranged by American Councils for International Education.

Their professional goals were:

• To understand the concept of sustainable agroforestry and how it complements forestry sector efforts in sustainable forest management.

• To examine the various U.S. Federal and State governments in implementing various incentives for sustainable forest management including how they could be used to promote sustainable agroforestry.

• To examine permitting schemes for legal extraction of wildlife, plants, and other forest products from Federal lands, including the development, maintenance, and enforcement of permitted activities on public lands.

• To explore shared permit responsibilities between Federal and State agencies, as well as revisions to permitted activities, such as cultural use permits for indigenous groups.

• To understand the underlying enabling conditions for successful Public-Private Partnerships that promote sustainable agroforestry practices with positive benefits to farmer and business communities.

• To understand how various stakeholders work across a broad coalition of partners to engage and empower rural communities to make a meaningful conservation impact in carbon sequestration, wildfire mitigation, wildlife habitat, clean water, and other support for rural communities.

South Africa Delegation

Dr. Kahilu Kajimo-Shakantu, who is a faculty member at the University of the Free State in South Africa visited UFIC to explore the possibility of collaborative ideas between the College of Design, Construction and Planning and FSSA.
Dr. Kajimo-Shakantu also met with several faculty members to discuss possible collaborations in the future. Her areas of expertise are in Land and housing/human settlement development and management; Property management; Construction procurement; Contractor / SMME development; Construction economics and industry development; Socio-economic sustainability of construction and property sectors.
