UF Study Abroad Receives Grant to Support Students Traveling Abroad

Gainesville, FL (5/14/2026) — The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) is once again celebrating a significant achievement in expanding global opportunities for its students. As announced today, UF has been selected to receive a 2026 grant from the Institute of International Education through its IIE American Passport Project for $4,125.

This funding will allow UF to support up to 25 Pell-eligible students by providing $165 each to help cover the cost of obtaining a U.S. passport—often a key barrier to studying abroad. The initiative is designed to encourage early access to international education, particularly for students who may not otherwise have the financial means to begin the process.

“We are proud to continue expanding access to study abroad opportunities for our students,” said Marta L. Wayne, Dean and Associate Provost. “Programs like the IIE American Passport Project help remove initial barriers and open the door to transformative global experiences.”

This recognition builds on the University of Florida’s long-standing commitment to international education. UF was recently ranked as a top-producing institution for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, 14th in the nation among large institutions (15,000+ students). The Gilman recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by highlighting institutions with the highest number of Gilman Scholars between 2001–2025.
