Global Fellows Program Workshop Series: Finding Funding for International Research
Global Fellows explore funding tools and strategies to support international research.
The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) continued the 2026 Global Fellows Program workshop series with Workshop 1: “Finding Funding to Support International Research,” a session designed to help faculty fellows move from seed funding to sustainable, long-term support for international research and scholarship.
The session featured Dr. Kalene Johnson and Alex Barnett, Research Development Strategists with UF Research’s Strategic Research Development (SRD) team. They shared how SRD strengthens UF’s research competitiveness through training, strategic planning, and support for major research initiatives. Speakers also highlighted how SRD teams assist faculty by monitoring federal policy and budget trends, identifying funding opportunities, interpreting agency priorities, and supporting the development of competitive research proposals.
UF Research’s Strategic Research Development team guided faculty fellows on identifying and securing external funding, highlighting how to access the latest opportunities across federal agencies, state and local governments, private foundations, and industry partners. During the workshop, speakers demonstrated Pivot-RP, a searchable database of funding opportunities available to all UF faculty, staff, and students, as well as expert profile tools such as Scholars@UF, which help increase researcher visibility and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. They also clarified the process for applying to limited-submission funding opportunities and outlined key resources tailored to early-career faculty.
In the second half of the session, Dr. Michael Kung, Director and Assistant Scholar in UFIC’s Office for Global Research Engagement (OGRE), introduced additional funding search tools and international research opportunities relevant to Global Fellows. His presentation highlighted pathways connected to Fulbright programs and other UFIC faculty development initiatives that support global research engagement, partnership-building, and international collaboration.
The Global Fellows Program includes an orientation session, a six-part workshop series, and a final symposium in which faculty fellows present their international research proposals, followed by an expert panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of international research.
