Global Fellows Program: Dr. Samuel Martins Builds International Collaborations on Plant-Microbe Interactions

For Dr. Samuel Martins, assistant professor in the UF/IFAS Department of Plant Pathology, the University of Florida International Center’s Global Fellows Program provided the foundation to expand his research network across Europe and strengthen collaborations in the field of plant-microbe interactions. With support from the Global Fellows seed grant, Dr. Martins visited three leading institutions: Utrecht University in the Netherlands, the University of Southampton and the University of Cambridge in the UK. His trip combined seminars, research discussions, and laboratory tours and visits, all centered on advancing his program’s focus: understanding the structure and function of bacteria in the phytobiome and their role in supporting plant resilience against biotic and abiotic stresses.
During his travels, Dr. Martins presented three seminars showcasing his lab’s work and engaged directly with world-renowned experts in the field. He met with Dr. Corné Pieterse, Professor of Plant-Microbe Interactions and Scientific Director of the Institute of Environmental Biology at Utrecht University; Dr. Tomislav Cernava, Associate Professor of Plant-Microbe Interactions at the University of Southampton; and Dr. Sebastian Schornack, Senior Group Leader at the University of Cambridge, whose research also investigates host-microbe relationships. “These meetings were an excellent opportunity to share my research program and to identify common research interests,” Dr. Martins said. “The discussions highlighted how our approaches can complement one another and set the stage for collaborative projects.”
The tangible outcomes of this international trip include establishing connections with partner institutions, opening doors for joint research initiatives, and building knowledge in cutting-edge areas of plant and environmental microbiomes. By engaging with European scholars at the forefront of microbial ecology, Dr. Martins not only shared UF’s expertise but also brought back fresh perspectives that will benefit both his lab and students in Gainesville, Florida.
Ultimately, his international visit reinforced a guiding principle of the Global Fellows Program: that early-stage collaborations can grow into long-term partnerships, enhancing UF’s global presence while advancing solutions for resilient agricultural systems worldwide.
